Nokia is getting ready to release a new entry-level phone that will probably be a hit in emerging markets: Nokia 2220 slide. The 2220 slide is obviously a slider, and it looks like it will come in many color versions, including red, blue and green.

The handset uses Nokia’s S40 UI and it only has dual-band GSM connectivity (900/1800 MHz). Its other features apparently include: 128 x 160 pixels display, 3.5mm headset jack, FM radio, Opera Mini browser, VGA camera, 10MB of internal memory, and a battery that should last up to 8 hours in talk-time mode, or up to 400 hours in stand-by.

In today’s reports, Nokia, a company form Finland has denied to be working on a mobile phone running on Google’s Android mobile operating system. Guardian, a British daily newspaper reports today morning, “industry insiders” saying that Nokia would unveil in September a mobile phone running on the Google Android operating system (OS).

But Nokia has denied Guardian’s speculation and said to the Reuters that, there is “Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever.” Nokia also denied as a company spokesman quoted, “Everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices.”

Nokia’s choice in OS is none other than Symbian for smartphones, or multimedia computers, i.e. company’s devices. But recently, Nokia is having hard time to keep up its name in the market and HSBC analysts gives his views, by the Guardian reckon that the Finnish company has lost smartphone market share, going down to 31 percent at the end of 2008 (from 47 percent in 2007).

During the recent times, Nokia has done a large investment in Symbian. The biggest move during last year was the company buying out the partners in the Symbian OS joint venture. Nokia was planning with this to offer the Symbian platform free of cost to the other smartphone manufacturers.

This sounds similar as Google is using the same approach with its Android mobile OS. Google, the biggest search engine is offering Android for free to any manufacturers that want to release smartphones using its OS. This model is proving very popular till now with lot of Android cell phones coming out this year, for an example, T-Mobile myTouch 3G, Samsung Galaxy, and HTC Hero.

Google’s Android OS was built from the ground up with touchscreen use in mind while the Nokia’s latest devices featuring the Symbian OS (the flagship N97 and the 5800 model) have been criticized for the lack of finger-friendly navigation. Symbian OS was originally designed for the alphanumeric keyboards devices and then revamped for touchscreen phones, thus requires the the use of a stylus in many cases.

Although, Guardian’s “industry insiders” are not completely wrong. Nokia has partnered with Intel to create a new stable of mobile products later in the last month. As Nokia currently owns a Linux-based Maemo OS, which powers the company’s Internet tablets, there is a possibility of Google Android to be the company’s OS of choice for this new breed of devices.

After iPhone it is the turn of G-phones. The much in news Google Android phone is supposed to hit the Indian market by July-end, with topnotch handset makers HTC, Motorola and Samsung firming up plans to ship the device to the country. It is learnt that Samsung is planning on shipping the Google Android phone by July, as part of its global launch.

Andy Rubin, senior director for Mobile Platforms for Google announced around 18 phones based on the Android operating system which would be available in the market worldwide by the year-end.

With the launch of the system, the G-phone will compete against other mobile operating systems such as Microsoft Windows mobile, RIM’s BlackBerry platform, Apple’s proprietary iPhone and Symbian, on Nokia handsets.

The leading mobile phone manufacturers like HTC, Motorola and Samsung are planning to bring in the device to the Indian market. A person close to the development mentioned the first Android phone G1 from HTC and witnessed positive responses from the US market after its launch late last year.

“India is a growth market and mobile manufacturers are launching all the latest product lines, and Android will not be left behind. The first phone will hit the market in July. Motorola is also planning to launch it in November,” he said.

Ajay Sharma, country head, HTC India, told Financial Chronicle that the company was shipping the new HTC Magic G2 phone for the UK market. However, he declined to share any dates on the India launch.

“Every Android device requires clearance from Google, since it is based on the Android operating system. We cannot share any exact date for the launch of the Android phone in the Indian market, but it is likely to be launched by the end of this year. Globally, we have two handset models G1 with T-Mobile and the recently launched Magic G2,” Sharma said.

The Motorola spokesperson said, “We will be shipping Android products this year and are excited about the upcoming portfolio. However, we are not making any announcements on Android-based products at this time.”

In addition to this, ASUS, Huawei, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung and HTC have partnered together under the open handset alliance to bring in devices on the Android platform.
